Benjamin West is a Native American digital 2D & 3D artist and Emmy Award-winning photojournalist who uses video as his primary medium. He was raised in Oklahoma and instilled with strong Southern Cheyenne traditions by his father, and is a member of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe. His upbringing inspired him to preserve the culture of his people for future generations.
West began his proactive photography career in 2005, and in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, he founded The Arkeketa Project to fight the issues impacting Indian Country and to address the virus' disproportionate effect on Native American communities. In 2011, West spent four months in Libya, two of which were embedded with Gaddafi's regime in Tripoli.
In 2019, West's photography was featured on the cover of The Geraldo Show: My Life as Roadkill in the Day of Trump. He accompanied Geraldo to Puerto Rico to document the destruction of Hurricane Maria and was a guest on Air Force One with the administration when they returned. Later in the year, West traveled to El Salvador to photograph MS13 prisoners and government policing in San Salvador's Mega Prison.
In 2020, West's digital art print titled "Standing Bear" was purchased by the Newark Museum of Art for their permanent collection. The photograph was taken three months before the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. West also created the "Why We Wear Red" series, commissioning a traditional red ribbon dress from Otoe Missouria artist Kennetha Greenwood to bring attention to the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. The dress was accepted by the Montclair Art Museum and added to their permanent collection.
